Chiropractic
What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of medicine that focuses on the problems of the muscles, skeleton and nerves, and the effects of these disorders on your general health. Chiropractic is used to treat disorders such as but not limited to lower back pain, neck pain, headaches, shoulder pain, hip pain, knee pain, carpal tunnel and pain in the joints.
Chiropractic treatment involves a hands-on approach to healthcare that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.
The most common and well known procedures that chiropractors perform is the manual adjustment or manipulation. The purpose of the manipulation or adjustment is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become stuck – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injuries can occur from a one-time trauma such as a fall playing sports or can be cumulative in nature from the repetitive stresses placed on our bodies from things such as poor posture while in front of your computer or driving long distances. These types of traumas cause inflammatory changes in the tissues resulting in pain, tightness and decreased movement. The chiropractic manipulation reduces the pain and dysfunction in the tissues by restoring the lost movement in the area thus allowing it to heal. Chiropractors also utilize other forms of treatment such as electric stimulation, ultrasound, heat, ice, taping, rehabilitation etc.
Does the Chiropractic adjustment hurt?
The purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is to restore joint movement that has been lost due to tightened muscles occurring from injuries. The adjustment is designed to carefully stretch the joint itself so that it can move more freely again. The popping sound heard is actually gas being released from the joint fluid when the joint decompresses as it moves again. This is similar to the decompression heard when one opens a soda can. Careful evaluation of the injury and specific body region ensures that the area is ready to be adjusted and will not hurt.
